At our October meeting we discussed West Seattle Transit
Issues,
as well as the benefits and costs of Prop 1.
Prop 1 has been stripped of the roads portion of its bill and in its own
words "will build 36 miles of clean & reliable light rail, add 100,000
new bus hours, and expand Sounder. For about $69 per adult each year, it
plans to build a system that can carry over one million people daily..."

At our September 15 SWS members Chas Redmond and Stu Hennessy explored pedestrian and bicycle issues in West Seattle. Both Chas and Stu are active in these issues and led a discussion of ideas of how we can make West Seattle easier, safer, and more convenient to move about without a car.
Here is the Pedestrian Issue presentation (Powerpoint version) given by Chas (also available in PDF format).
Our August 18 meeting was our summer potluck at Camp Long.
Our July 21 meeting featured Michael Grenetz of the Washington Toxics Coalition who spoke about problems with toxics in our food. Michelle Gaither of Toxinspect covered toxics in consumer products, and Ben Cook of E-Green Building Systems discussed toxics in building materials, the chemistry involved, and why this issue is generally so important.

On November 17 We Hosted two events:
#1 - Open-Space discussion at Camp Long
"How do we Make West Seattle More Sustainable in 2008?"
(Look for notes of the discussion posted at sws-main.blogspot.com)
#2 - Our Winter Celebration Potluck!

BALLE Seattle, Solar Washington, City Repair Seattle, Sustainable Ballard, NW Biodiesel Network, NW EcoBuilding Guild, the Seattle Permaculture Guild
We hosted a FORUM about the RTID in October 2007:
The RTID (Regional Transportation Initiative District) proposal will raise $47 Billion over 20 years to build 50 additional miles of light rail and numerous road and highway projects. Many SWS members came to Camp Long on Monday October 15 to listen to reasons (and ask questions) for the YES and NO positions on this important transportation levy. SWS hosted representatives from both Transportation Choices Coalition and the Sierra Club, and we gave them a good range of very informed questions!
Among some of the questions we heard discussed were:
| Is it cost-effective? | |
| Will it reduce commute time? | |
| Will it reduce oil-dependence? | |
| Will it address global warming? | |
| How will West Seattle be affected? | |
| What are the alternatives? |
You can download an .mp3 recording of the evening (careful, it's 33MB!) right here
